Topic:  USPTA Champion of Champions Tournament on Feb. 26 + 27

Hello tennis friends in Volusia & Flagler Counties.

When can you consider a tennis tournament a success? If it has been around for a number of years, and draws regularly hundreds of local players and spectators, it must be doing something right. The “USPTA Champions of Champions Cup” is such an event.

“USPTA Champion Of Champions” Tournament Feb. 26 + 27 at Florida Tennis Center
Now in its 7th edition, the “USPTA Champion of Champions” tournament at Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach brings together many tennis players from our two counties and beyond for a weekend of good competition and to raise money for two of the “United Way” charities, “The ARC of Volusia” and the “Literacy Council.” This event is all doubles, so you must enter with a partner. The categories are 2.5/3.0/3.5/4.0/4.5/Open, and age groups Open/50+/60+, and 70+. Most players will enter to represent their club and compete for the Cup and bragging rights for having the best players in the area. However, anyone can enter as an independent and compete for the signature glass plaque and winners of your rated level. Also, tournament organizer Dave Brown and his staff will make every effort to find you a strong partner if you want to participate but don’t have a tennis partner to bring along. Fall 2010 GVTL ratings determine the division you may enter. The event begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26.

In addition to offering very good tennis – remember: clubs send their best players at any given level; hence, you will play against the top players in each rating category - , the tournament also always offers a good opportunity to meet new players, watch some exciting matches, cheer on your team, and all for a good cause. On top of all of that, your entry fee allows you attend the players’ party on Saturday afternoon, 3 – 5 p.m., and to participate in a silent auction. Last year with the help of generous supporters, this event raised over $2,000 and attracted over 400 attendees.

For the history buffs among our readers: the CoC Cup last year was won by Palm Coast Tennis Center for the first time, after 5 years of Florida Tennis Center supremacy.

What are the agencies that benefit from the tournament? The “United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties, Inc.,” (UWVF; www.unitedway-vfc.org) is a 501-c-3 not-for-profit corporation. It began as the “Daytona Beach Community Fund" in 1941 and has grown into today's “United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties,” raising funds for its partner agencies. In this particular case, the funds raised will benefit two organizations for adults: “The Arc of Volusia” (www.arcvolusia.org) provides community and center based support and services to adults with mental retardation and developmental disabilities. The “Volusia Literacy Council” (www.volusialiteracy.org) provides one-on-one tutoring in reading, writing, math, and workplace skills to adults functioning at, or below, the 9th grade level of literacy.

Great causes both. How to sign up for the tournament? Enter online at “Active.com,” click “Golf & Tennis,” then “Tennis,” then “Tournaments” where you enter your zip code, then “7th Annual USPTA Champion of Champions.” Or, just click here: http://www.active.com/tennis-tournament/daytona-beach-fl/the-7th-annual-uspta-champion-of-champions-tennis-tournament-2011. Registration is now open; entries close on Feb. 23. Cost is $33 per player. For additional information, call Dave Brown at (386) 236-4292, or dbrown@icihomes.com. Good luck to all.
