The Blast is brought to you by The Tennis Network of Greater Volusia County.

  1. “USPTA Champion of Champions Cup” Won by Florida Tennis Center

  2. “Junior Futures Series” 2011 Starts Next Weekend

  3. Job Opening At USTA Florida in Daytona Beach

Hello tennis friends in Volusia & Flagler Counties.

Most tennis players are either social players or competitive. Thus, coming up with events that cater to both types is not easy. Locally for adults, the “Champion of Champions Cup” is one of those opportunities. For juniors, the “Futures” series of tournaments fills that need, too. Read about both of them below. And then there is a job offering from the USTA, right here in Daytona Beach. Read on.

1. Champions of Champions Cup 2011 Won by Florida Tennis Center
Great sport, gorgeous weather, fine hospitality, all for a good cause – what else can you ask for in a tennis tournament? The “7th Annual USPTA Champions of Champions Cup” at Florida Tennis Center offered all of that, and then some. After two days of competitive matches in 18 different categories, tournament director Dave Brown reports: “The tournament concluded with the Florida Tennis Center reclaiming the coveted Cup from the Palm Coast Tennis Center. Almost 200 players from ten tennis facilities throughout Volusia and Flagler Counties participated in the event that donates its proceeds to support United Way agencies, The ARC and the Literacy Council of Volusia/Flagler. Oceans Racquet Club in Daytona Beach Shores came in second, followed by Oceanside Country Club and the Trails Racquet Club in Ormond Beach. Other clubs participating included Spruce Creek Country Club, Palm Coast Tennis Center, Plantation Bay, DeLand Recreation, Grand Haven, and Hammock Beach.”
Thanks, Dave. Congratulations to the winning team, and thanks to everybody who participated. The event was run expertly by Dave Brown and Rich Walker, both top USPTA pros. For plenty of pictures of the event, click here.

2. Junior Futures Tournament Series March 5 – May 7
Building up traditions is not easy. The events are held every spring on Saturdays at a tennis club near you. Here is the line-up for 2011:

Junior Futures Tournaments

The tournament is played in age groups under 10/12/14/16 years, each for boys and girls. This year for the first time, the 10 & under category will use the popular “QuickStart” format. Entry into each of these events is only $15 per player. Players get a t-shirt at their first tournament they play. The format is flexible, depending on the number of players. All tourneys are usually over in 3 hours or less. Players get one point for showing up, and one more point for each match they win. The more events a kid plays, the more points he/she collects. There are trophies for winners of every tournament, and for the overall winner of the tournament series at the Grand Finale at Florida Tennis Center. These tournaments have a great “family feel” to them. Call the tournament directors above for exact starting times and other information. The first event is this coming Saturday at the Trails Racquet Club, starting at 12.30 p.m.

3. USTA Florida Is Hiring
