Two Volusia County Teams are going to Nationals!

FTC Ladies 3.0/40+ Going to Nationals

It’s been a while, but finally a team from our area is going to
USTA National Championships. Florida Tennis Center’s 3.0/40+ women won the sectional tournament in Orlando last weekend. They will move on to the national stage in Rancho Mirage/CA in October. The following players contributed to the success:
Gloria Burke (captain), Shannon Adams, Tara Bryan, Sharon Burt, Jennifer Eldredge, Jody Harrington, Tammy Lalande, Christine McLaughlin, Lisa Otten, Kathy Quinto, Lynn Riegner, Reiko Walls, and Ellen Weidenbauer. The Ladies were undefeated in the group stage and beat a team from St. John’s county 3:2 in the finals. Congratulations, ladies!

FTC Men’s 3.0/40+ Team Goes to Nationals

Just like the 3.0/40+ women before them, a men’s team out of Florida Tennis Center has qualified for the National Championships. The 3.0/40+ team beat a team from Duval County in the finals and is headed for the Nationals in October. The team members are: Al Huertas (captain), Jeff Beasley, Nick de Julio, Paul Holmes, Mike Muller, Ray Murray, Kevin Petka, Stephen Phipps, Carlos Repicio, Kris Rowley, David Spitzer, and Chris Zimmer. Congratulations, gentlemen. They will join the FTC women on their trip to Rancho Mirage/CA October 24 – 26. What a fun trip that will be!

 Volusia Youth Players Fund

The Tennis Network of Greater Volusia County in Volusia County, FL, has announced the launch of the Volusia Youth Players Fund to support local youth tennis players with fees related to participation in USTA Florida Jr. Team Tennis leagues. "The Volusia Youth Players Fund is a community effort to support families that need assistance supporting their young players' tennis game through USTA programming," says Molly Zimmer, USTA Florida tennis program coordinator and USTA liaison to the Tennis Network.

"We have immediate need to help scholarship the cost of 30-40 players from Derbyshire Park in Daytona Beach who wish to participate in USTA Jr. Team Tennis this April," Zimmer says. "The Tennis Network is encouraging facilities to help raise money for the fund by hosting a fundraising event, reaching out to league players for a donation to the fund, and sharing this information with club tennis committees and helping us spread the word."

The Trails Racquet Club in Ormond Beach, FL, hosted the first fundraising event for the Youth Players Fund on Saturday, April 14, 2012. The event featured round robin play and a raffle, with 100 percent of the $10 per-player fee donated to the Fund. The event raised $870 for the Volusia Youth Players Fund.

Donations to the Fund should be made out to the Tennis Network and mailed to: Tennis Network of Greater Volusia, Attn. Treasurer Peg Harper, 5 Barcelona Trail, Ormond Beach, FL, 32174.
